👷 Starting a construction company in Baytown, TX: which licenses and registrations do I need?

Xavier wrote: “I started painting canvas, and people liked it. I am not selling right now, but maybe in the future. I want to set up an LLC.”

Hi Xavier, Xavier Construction sounds like a promising venture. New homes, additions, and renovations keep crews in demand, and a builder known for finishing on schedule wins referrals from every satisfied homeowner. Since your goals are to protect your personal assets, limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt and raise capital or sell shares, the LLC sits at the center of this plan. Here is what we will cover: how to structure Xavier Construction, the tax IDs it needs, and the licenses that let you open in Baytown, then a quick recap.

Painting canvas for fun and selling it are different worlds, so the real question is when to start. When you do sell, a Texas sales and use tax permit covers original art sold directly, and until then no license is needed to paint at home. Forming an LLC now is optional; it helps once buyers, galleries, or commissions arrive and keeps lawsuits away from your savings. Your form lists a construction business with six employees, though, which is a different picture; if that is real, you will need a Texas unemployment account and the right insurance. Keep receipts for paint and canvas to show a profit motive when the hobby turns into income. What Xavier Construction needs LLC (limited liability company) – Forming an LLC puts a legal wall between the business and your personal assets. A homeowner who blames your crew for a leaking roof or a cracked foundation might sue for repairs, and an LLC confines the claim to the company. Non-US residents can own an LLC too; the EIN application simply follows a different path. If you plan to sell shares to investors, a corporation may fit better later, and an LLC can convert when that day comes.Texas assumed name certificate – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "Xavier Construction" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 6 employees, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.Texas sales and use tax permit – Needed if you sell products alongside your service, and it lets you buy resale items tax-free.Texas employer ID – With 6 employees, you need a state employer account number for unemployment insurance. Texas has no state income tax on wages, so there is no withholding account to open, which is one less form to file.Business license – Governments license businesses so they can collect a modest tax, usually based on gross receipts or a flat yearly amount, and keep inspectors checking safety: exits, fire extinguishers, and how many people a space can hold. Plan on one for Xavier Construction in Baytown.Contractor license – Most states require a general or residential contractor license for building work, often with exams, insurance, and a bond.Building permits – Individual projects usually need building permits and inspections, which the licensed contractor typically pulls.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a construction company it is NAICS 236118 (Residential Remodelers). With 6 employees planned, you are already creating jobs in Baytown. That makes 8 items on your list.

Tip: Put every job in a written contract with scope, payment schedule, change order procedures, and warranty terms.

To recap: Xavier Construction in Baytown, TX needs an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a sales tax permit for product sales, a state employer ID, a business license, contractor license, and building permits. Get those in place and you can spend your time on customers instead of paperwork.

Starting a construction company in Bonnerdale, AR: which licenses and registrations do I need?

The owner wrote: “Hill Foundation Repair is a father and son company that contracts with individuals to repair foundations in homes or buildings, creating a more level and stable foundation. We will accept contracts in the Hot Springs, Arkansas area, and our business is publicized by word of mouth. It is a side job business.”

Hill House Foundation Repair is an exciting name to see on a new business in Bonnerdale. New homes, additions, and renovations keep crews in demand, and a builder known for finishing on schedule wins referrals from every satisfied homeowner. Since your goals are to protect your personal assets, limit exposure from sales, clients, employees, or debt and manage self-employment tax, the LLC sits at the center of this plan. Below we walk through the three things every new business in Arkansas sorts out (structure, tax IDs, and licenses) and then sum it all up.

Word of mouth is the best advertising for foundation work, and it works both ways: a neighbor's sinking porch gets fixed, and a bad repair becomes the story told across Hot Springs. That is a strong reason to put the business in an LLC, with a short written operating agreement covering how the two of you split work and profit. Arkansas generally wants a contractor license once a job passes a modest size, so confirm your usual jobs fit under it, and write a signed contract for every repair with a clear scope and warranty. With two people involved, workers' compensation coverage becomes a question as soon as either of you is an employee rather than an owner.

What Hill House Foundation Repair needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC shields your house, car, and savings from claims against the business, and it looks more established to customers and banks. A homeowner who blames your crew for a leaking roof or a cracked foundation might sue for repairs, and an LLC confines the claim to the company. Once profits grow, an LLC can elect S corporation tax treatment, which can lower self-employment tax; ask a tax adviser when the numbers justify it.
  2. DBA (doing business as) registration – If you operate as a sole proprietor, or under a name different from your LLC's exact legal name, registering "Hill House Foundation Repair" lets you use it on signs, invoices, and your business bank account.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 2 employees, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  4. Arkansas sales tax permit (seller's permit) – Needed if you sell products alongside your service, and it lets you buy resale items tax-free.
  5. Arkansas employer ID – With 2 employees, you need a state employer account number for payroll withholding and unemployment insurance. It works like the EIN, but for state payroll taxes.
  6. Business license – A business license puts Hill House Foundation Repair on the official map in Bonnerdale, which landlords, banks, and many customers will expect to see before they sign anything. Home occupation rules commonly cap client visits and delivery trucks on a residential street, so read them before you print business cards.
  7. Contractor license – Most states require a general or residential contractor license for building work, often with exams, insurance, and a bond.
  8. Building permits – Individual projects usually need building permits and inspections, which the licensed contractor typically pulls.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a construction company it is NAICS 236118 (Residential Remodelers). With 2 employees planned, you are already creating jobs in Bonnerdale. That makes 8 items on your list.

I need advice on business insurance, finding investors, a website and advertising for my record label. Does the LLC service include the state fee and an operating agreement?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

For a record label, an LLC is the right base. You handle artists' contracts, royalties and releases, and the LLC separates any dispute from your personal assets. The state's filing charge is shown apart from our service fee on the order page, and the operating agreement is prepared with your LLC, so your bank can open the account.

• Insurance: ask an insurance agent about general liability and media liability for a label, plus coverage for equipment.
• Investors: they usually want a formed LLC, an operating agreement and clean books first, then a clear plan for how their money is used.
• Website and advertising: register the name and open the bank account before you spend on promotion.

A surety bond is not what you need. Insurance protects you from claims, while bonds guarantee performance in certain regulated trades.

Do I need an LLC and a tax ID if my items are not taxable in my state? I also need to register a business at an address in Georgia.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Yes, an LLC still makes sense even when your products are not taxable. Taxability is only about sales tax, while the LLC is about protecting your personal assets from product and customer claims, and about credibility. With investors in mind, a formal company is what they will want to see.

On the tax ID, you still need an EIN for banking and federal taxes, since that is separate from sales tax. A seller's permit may not be needed if everything you sell is exempt, but many suppliers and marketplaces still ask for one, so check with them. Health and beauty products can be taxable in other places, so check where you sell.

For the Georgia address, I cannot supply an office location. Register the business at the real place where you operate, or use a registered agent's address for state papers. A local business license depends on that location.

I live in New York and want to start a mobile petting zoo. I also want to sell gift baskets by taking the order and having a company ship it. What do I need, and can I charge sales tax?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

A mobile petting zoo carries real risk, since children and animals mix and a bite or a fall could lead to a claim. An LLC is the proper vehicle, because it separates that exposure from your personal assets, and it can bring in investors. A foreign owner is fine for an LLC.

• Petting zoo: animal exhibits are regulated, so expect animal health paperwork, permits for events, and liability insurance that venues will ask for.
• Business license, locally, plus approvals for each event location.
• EIN, for banking and taxes.

For the gift baskets, to charge sales tax you need a seller's permit, which in New York is registered as a certificate of authority. Even if you never touch the product or the money, if you take the order and your company is the seller, you generally must be registered to collect tax. If the other company is the seller of record, it may handle that, so clarify who sells.

How long does it take to get a reseller's permit in New York with expedited service? I do not have a certificate of authority for my LLC. I also have questions about zoning for a home inspection business.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

In New York, the sales tax registration is called a certificate of authority, and a reseller's permit is built on it, so you do need one for your LLC. We can file it with expedited handling, which moves faster than standard processing, but I cannot promise a specific number of days because timing depends on the application.

Home inspection is a service, so the permit matters mainly if you also sell products or tools that are taxable. Your LLC fits the business well: inspectors face claims when something is missed, and the LLC separates those from your personal assets.

• Zoning: a home office is usually allowed, but you do not need a vote from the town council in most cases. Ask locally whether a home occupation approval applies.
• Professional license: home inspectors are licensed in many places, so confirm before you take clients.

File the certificate of authority well before your first sale, since New York asks that you register in advance.

What license do I need to buy seafood in Louisiana, transport it to Tennessee and sell it to restaurants and the public, and do I need a wholesale license?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Form an LLC before anything else. Moving fresh shrimp and other seafood across state lines involves spoilage, illness and vehicle risks, and the LLC protects your personal assets while showing restaurants that they are dealing with an established company. A foreign owner can hold an LLC, too.

• EIN, for the account, payroll and supplier accounts.
• Seller's permit: it works as your wholesale and resale registration, so you can buy without tax and sell with tax. You may need one wherever you sell.
• Seafood dealer permit: seafood is regulated at each step, including buying, cold storage and delivery, so ask where your product is sourced and sold.
• Business license, locally.

Whether you open a fish market or a restaurant, each needs its own food permits and inspections.
