What does it take to legally open a collectibles store in Junction City, OR?

William wrote: “I sell sports collectables and memorabilia online using eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.”

Hi William, Wood B Sports sounds like a promising venture. Old action figures, comics, and movie memorabilia pull at childhood memories, and nostalgic buyers often open their wallets wide. For most new owners, the LLC is the foundation everything else rests on. In this answer you will find the business structure, the tax registrations, and the local and industry licenses for Wood B Sports, plus a short recap at the end.

Good news first: Oregon has no sales tax, so your in-state collectible sales don't need a seller's permit. Where it gets interesting is the other 49 states, where buyers may owe tax and, once your sales into one pass its threshold, you may be asked to register. Marketplaces like eBay and Etsy collect and remit tax on their own platforms, but not on Craigslist or in-person deals. If you operate as Wood B Sports and your LLC has a different name, file an assumed business name. Authenticity is the risk to insure against, so keep certificates and receipts for signed items. With three employees, you will open Oregon withholding and unemployment accounts.

What Wood B Sports needs

  1. LLC (limited liability company) – An LLC shields your house, car, and savings from claims against the business, and it looks more established to customers and banks. A buyer who insists a comic was described as near mint when it was not can pursue the company, but your family's savings are not the prize.
  2. DBA (doing business as) registration – Registering "Wood B Sports" tells the public who stands behind the name. If you form an LLC under that exact name, the LLC filing itself protects the name and a separate DBA is usually unnecessary.
  3. EIN (federal tax ID number) – You plan on 3 employees, so the federal tax ID number (EIN) is required for payroll, and you will also use it for the business bank account and supplier accounts.
  4. Sales tax – Oregon has no statewide sales tax, so you usually will not need a sales tax permit for sales made in Oregon. If you sell into other states, their rules may apply.
  5. Oregon employer ID – With 3 employees, you need a state employer account number for payroll withholding and unemployment insurance. It works like the EIN, but for state payroll taxes.
  6. Business license – Most places require a local business license to operate, including home-based businesses. Check the rules where Wood B Sports will operate in Junction City, and ask about home occupation and zoning rules if you work from home. If you rent, many permits ask for the landlord's written consent to run a business from the property.

By the numbers: Banks, insurers, and tax forms will ask for your industry code. For a collectibles store it is NAICS 451120 (Hobby, Toy, and Game Stores), 459120 under the 2022 update. With 3 employees planned, you are already creating jobs in Junction City. That makes 6 items on your list.

Tip: List older toys as collectibles for adults, since they may not meet current children's safety standards.

To recap: Wood B Sports in Junction City, OR needs an LLC, a DBA, an EIN, a state employer ID, and a business license. Check them off one by one and you will open with confidence.

I sell sports collectables and memorabilia online using eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc

ANSWER: Because of your trade name, "Wood B Sports" for your collectables business, you need to file a DBA , a Corporation or an LLC in Junction City, OR. If you decide to be an LLC, you will need the LLC certificate, an EIN, a business license and an LLC operating agreement. Also, in order to sell memorabilia, you need a seller's permit because you need to collect sales tax when you sell them. For example, if you sell a baseball hat at $100, you need to collect 8% tax assuming that is the sales tax rate in your state. Since you are doing business in Oregon, you don't need to collect sales tax, but you do need a resale certificate to buy wholesale from other states.

I need advice on business insurance, finding investors, a website and advertising for my record label. Does the LLC service include the state fee and an operating agreement?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

For a record label, an LLC is the right base. You handle artists' contracts, royalties and releases, and the LLC separates any dispute from your personal assets. The state's filing charge is shown apart from our service fee on the order page, and the operating agreement is prepared with your LLC, so your bank can open the account.

• Insurance: ask an insurance agent about general liability and media liability for a label, plus coverage for equipment.
• Investors: they usually want a formed LLC, an operating agreement and clean books first, then a clear plan for how their money is used.
• Website and advertising: register the name and open the bank account before you spend on promotion.

A surety bond is not what you need. Insurance protects you from claims, while bonds guarantee performance in certain regulated trades.

Do I need an LLC and a tax ID if my items are not taxable in my state? I also need to register a business at an address in Georgia.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Yes, an LLC still makes sense even when your products are not taxable. Taxability is only about sales tax, while the LLC is about protecting your personal assets from product and customer claims, and about credibility. With investors in mind, a formal company is what they will want to see.

On the tax ID, you still need an EIN for banking and federal taxes, since that is separate from sales tax. A seller's permit may not be needed if everything you sell is exempt, but many suppliers and marketplaces still ask for one, so check with them. Health and beauty products can be taxable in other places, so check where you sell.

For the Georgia address, I cannot supply an office location. Register the business at the real place where you operate, or use a registered agent's address for state papers. A local business license depends on that location.

I live in New York and want to start a mobile petting zoo. I also want to sell gift baskets by taking the order and having a company ship it. What do I need, and can I charge sales tax?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

A mobile petting zoo carries real risk, since children and animals mix and a bite or a fall could lead to a claim. An LLC is the proper vehicle, because it separates that exposure from your personal assets, and it can bring in investors. A foreign owner is fine for an LLC.

• Petting zoo: animal exhibits are regulated, so expect animal health paperwork, permits for events, and liability insurance that venues will ask for.
• Business license, locally, plus approvals for each event location.
• EIN, for banking and taxes.

For the gift baskets, to charge sales tax you need a seller's permit, which in New York is registered as a certificate of authority. Even if you never touch the product or the money, if you take the order and your company is the seller, you generally must be registered to collect tax. If the other company is the seller of record, it may handle that, so clarify who sells.

How long does it take to get a reseller's permit in New York with expedited service? I do not have a certificate of authority for my LLC. I also have questions about zoning for a home inspection business.
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

In New York, the sales tax registration is called a certificate of authority, and a reseller's permit is built on it, so you do need one for your LLC. We can file it with expedited handling, which moves faster than standard processing, but I cannot promise a specific number of days because timing depends on the application.

Home inspection is a service, so the permit matters mainly if you also sell products or tools that are taxable. Your LLC fits the business well: inspectors face claims when something is missed, and the LLC separates those from your personal assets.

• Zoning: a home office is usually allowed, but you do not need a vote from the town council in most cases. Ask locally whether a home occupation approval applies.
• Professional license: home inspectors are licensed in many places, so confirm before you take clients.

File the certificate of authority well before your first sale, since New York asks that you register in advance.

What license do I need to buy seafood in Louisiana, transport it to Tennessee and sell it to restaurants and the public, and do I need a wholesale license?
10/14/2026 5:04 AM

Form an LLC before anything else. Moving fresh shrimp and other seafood across state lines involves spoilage, illness and vehicle risks, and the LLC protects your personal assets while showing restaurants that they are dealing with an established company. A foreign owner can hold an LLC, too.

• EIN, for the account, payroll and supplier accounts.
• Seller's permit: it works as your wholesale and resale registration, so you can buy without tax and sell with tax. You may need one wherever you sell.
• Seafood dealer permit: seafood is regulated at each step, including buying, cold storage and delivery, so ask where your product is sourced and sold.
• Business license, locally.

Whether you open a fish market or a restaurant, each needs its own food permits and inspections.
